physical modelling - April 2015

After a series of tests the flume set-up is complete. Bedforms developed and the instrumentation is working well. Onwards to the experiments.

physical modelling - April 2015

In preparation for the set of flume experiements sediment and instrumentation have been added to the Total Envrionment Simulator at The Deep.

physical modelling - March 2015

Building on the successful flume experiments of 2013 a second set of modelling runs will be undertaken at the Total Environment Simulator at The Deep. These fixed bed experiments will utilise the equilibrium conditions identified during the initial runs as a starting condition. Changing flow depth and velocity will enable detailed measurement of the turbulent flow fields in disequilibrium conditions.

personnel - January 2015

Dr Annie Ockelford has joined the bedforms team as a post-doctoral research assistant. She will begin work on the project in early February conducting experiments at the Total Environment Simulator at The Deep.

field visit - October 2014

Phil Ashworth and Jim Best visited the Jerry F. Costello Confluence Field Station in Alton, Illinois, USA to discuss logistical support for the upcoming fieldwork. This station will serve as the base for the multi-beam echo sounding campaign in April and May 2015.

EGU - April/May 2014

Continued progress in modelling the flow and shear stress fields associated with three dimensional bedforms was discussed by Rich Hardy at the European Geophysical Union General Assembly in Vienna, Austria from 27 April - 02 May 2014.

extension - January 2014

The project has been granted an extension from NERC and will now continue until October 2015.

personnel - January 2014

Arjan Reesink left his post as the project postdoc to take up a position as a Research Fellow in Earth Surface Dynamics at the University of Southampton. His research will focus on the processes and relationships between bedforms and their subsurface expression.

AGU & BSRG - December 2013

December was a busy month for sharing results as Rich Hardy and Chris Unsworth both presented at the Fall Meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco, USA. At the end of the month Arjan Reesink and Chris Unsworth ended a busy year for the project discussing bedform processes at the 52nd Annual General Meeting of the British Sedimentological Research Group in Hull, UK
